Curriculum Design

Juniper Hill School's Curriculum Design

At Juniper, our pupils are at the heart of everything we do. We recognise the importance of an ambitious, well-sequenced and progressive curriculum. One which sparks curiosity and a love of learning through enquiry, exploration and meaningful connections, which empowers our children to have the courage to make a difference in the world.

We use the National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage Framework as a starting point and have developed a knowledge-based curriculum for the pupils at Juniper Hill. Our core values of Respect, Community, Curiosity, Courage, Creativity and Independence are threaded throughout our curriculum to ensure we develop children who are respectful citizens who contribute positively to their community and the wider world.

We believe a strong foundation lays the groundwork for lifelong understanding and intellectual growth, and therefore we prioritise early reading and maths.

Our Values

Our values of Respect, Community, Curiosity, Courage, Creativity and Independence are throughout our curriculum. By promoting these values, we aim to develop, not only pupils who excel academically, but also individuals who are curious, independent and respectful.  Children who understand their responsibilities to their community and as global citizens.

Diversity

Juniper celebrates everyone within our community and local area. We use opportunities to celebrate this across our curriculum. We recognise the importance of our pupils and families feeling represented in their learning and value the engagement we get from this.

Depth of understanding

Knowledge is carefully planned and sequenced in all curriculum areas, so that pupils can build on prior learning, make connections and consolidate, promoting a depth of understanding. Our curriculum promotes deep learning and knowledge acquisition by revisiting learning objectives in different contexts over time. This approach, carried out at increasingly challenging levels, ensures that pupils meet and exceed National Curriculum objectives.

Cultural Capital and Enrichment

In addition to our classroom practice, our curriculum incorporates visits, workshops, school and community events, and competitions. These experiences not only provide opportunities to embed and enhance learning but also contribute to the development of cultural capital.

Holistic Development and Personal Development

Our curriculum places a strong emphasis on personal development, ensuring that pupils not only excel academically but also grow into well-rounded individuals. This focus extends to all aspects of SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural) development. This includes our unique Juniper Hill Life Skills and Butterfly Curriculums.

The integration of fundamental British values is a key aspect of our curriculum, fostering a sense of citizenship, respect and responsibility among our pupils.

Inclusion

At Juniper, we believe that every child has the right to learn, grow and succeed regardless of their background, ability or needs. Our curriculum is designed to be accessible, engaging and challenging for all learners, ensuring that every pupil feels valued and supported. Our inclusive approach means that every child is encouraged to contribute, feel a sense of belonging, develop the skills, knowledge and resilience they need for life.

At Juniper Hill, our curriculum is designed to inspire enjoyment in learning, promote kindness and celebrate achievement. Our curriculum empowers Juniper children to have the courage to seek opportunities and believe in their potential to make a difference in our world.
