On Tuesday 25th November, Year 6 set off early for our long-awaited adventure to the Natural History Museum.

One of our first stops was the 'Creepy Crawlies' section. Some pupils were absolutely mesmerised by spiders, scorpions and other creatures with far too many legs, and had to be gently guided away before they tried to adopt something they thought was 'cute' with fangs. Others found the whole thing suitably horrifying and kept a safe five-metre radius at all times.

Next, we discovered part of the mammals gallery - everything from tiny mice to bison. A few children were disappointed to learn that no, we could not ride the rhino, even “just for a minute”.

After lunch, we headed to the Volcanoes and Earthquakes show. Not only did we learn more about tectonic plates and eruptions, but we also managed to impress the presenter with our volcanic knowledge.

The Dinosaurs gallery was, unsurprisingly, a roaring success. One student asked whether the giant animatronic T-rex was real, which we can only take as a compliment to the museum’s engineering skills.

To finish the day, we wandered through the gems and minerals section. There we saw sparkling treasures of all colours.

It was a fantastic trip filled with learning, laughter and only minimal fear of spiders. Year 6 arrived back at school tired, inspired, and possibly ready to become volcanologists or palaeontologists.
