Duke of Burgundy Conservation Work

15 Year 6 children went to a Duke of Burgundy conservation site near Princes Risborough last Friday. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We worked with the Children Rangers, Nick from the Butterfly Conservation Trust and other volunteers. We have a Butterfly Curriculum at Juniper. Each year group learns about and champions a common and rare butterfly. The Year 6 children's rare butterfly is the Duke of Burgundy. We are trying to expand the Duke's habitat, by planting Duke loving plants for the butterflies to eat and lay their eggs on. The Duke lives in a few isolated areas, by encouraging the Duke to move we hope to create a corridor across the Princes Risborough area when they can live.

Our relationship with the Chiltern Rangers is important to us. Our children showed so much curiosity and respect for the environment. They loved being conservationists. We spent the morning planting and the afternoon cutting back trees and clearing the shrub to give the Duke space to thrive. The children found a Large, Yellow Underwing Caterpillar which they were excited by, having never seen one before!
